The old way, and the easier way
For years the advice for expats and visitors was the same: pick a few cinemas, bookmark their sites, and check each one every week for the sessions that were not dubbed into German. It worked, but it was slow, and it was easy to miss a screening.
English Cinema Berlin replaces that routine. The films page pulls together what is playing in English so you can scan one list instead of many. Listings are updated daily. We do not promise every screening in the city, but we bring the English-language ones we track into one place.
What do OV and OmU mean?
German cinemas dub most foreign films, so the labels on a listing matter. Two are worth knowing:
- OV (Originalversion): the original version, in the film's original language and not dubbed. For a Hollywood release that usually means English audio.
- OmU (Original mit Untertiteln): the original version with subtitles, and in Berlin those subtitles are usually in German.
Both mean you hear the original English soundtrack. OmU simply adds German subtitles, which many viewers find helpful rather than distracting.
Which cinemas show films in English?
English-language screenings turn up all over Berlin, from big multiplexes to small independent houses. A few you will see often:
- CineStar CUBIX am Alexanderplatz is a large multiplex right on Alexanderplatz in Mitte, handy for mainstream releases.
- CinemaxX Berlin sits at Potsdamer Platz and is one of the main Berlinale venues.
- b-ware! Ladenkino is a small independent cinema in Friedrichshain.
- Hackesche Höfe Kino is an arthouse tucked inside the Hackesche Höfe courtyards in Mitte.
- Rollberg Kinos is an arthouse cinema in Neukölln.
- Babylon Mitte near Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz leans towards films in their original language.
- Delphi LUX is a modern arthouse in Charlottenburg.
