One Battle After Another
If you're into wild, politically charged thrillers with a heart, One Battle After Another might just be your next favorite movie. Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson, this action-packed epic is inspired by Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland, but with Anderson’s own twist. It’s a sprawling, high-energy ride that blends revolutionary politics, family drama, and a hefty dose of paranoia.
The story centers on Bob, a washed-up ex-revolutionary living off the grid with his teenage daughter, Willa. Bob’s past comes crashing back when his old nemesis resurfaces, and Willa goes missing. What follows is a tense, emotional, and often explosive journey as both father and daughter are forced to confront the consequences of a life shaped by rebellion, betrayal, and survival.
Leonardo DiCaprio leads the cast as Bob, delivering a performance that critics are calling one of his most human and comedic to date. Sean Penn plays the villainous Lockjaw with chilling intensity, while newcomer Chase Infiniti shines as Willa, holding her own in a cast packed with heavyweights like Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor.
Visually, the film is a stunner. Shot mostly in VistaVision on 35mm film, it’s got a rich, cinematic look that’s rare these days. The action sequences are big and bold, but there’s also a lot of emotional depth, especially in the father-daughter dynamic that anchors the story. The score by Jonny Greenwood (with a couple of tracks by Jon Brion) adds another layer of intensity and emotion.
Critics have been raving, calling it Anderson’s most entertaining and thematically rich film yet. It’s been praised for its direction, writing, performances, and visuals. That said, it’s not for everyone. At 162 minutes, it’s a long ride, and its political themes and chaotic structure might not sit well with viewers looking for something more straightforward or apolitical.
If you love films that mix action with big ideas, or if you’re a fan of Anderson’s previous work, this one’s a must-see. But if you’re not into politically charged narratives or prefer your thrillers a bit more grounded, you might want to sit this one out. Either way, One Battle After Another is a bold, ambitious film that’s sure to spark conversation.
