Together

If you're into movies that mix romance, horror, and a whole lot of body-morphing weirdness, Together might just be your next obsession. Directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, this supernatural body horror flick stars real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a couple whose move to the countryside takes a seriously bizarre and grotesque turn.
At its core, Together is about love—messy, complicated, and, in this case, physically transformative love. When Tim and Millie stumble upon a mysterious cave, they begin to experience strange and increasingly disturbing changes in their bodies. What starts as a relationship already under strain quickly spirals into a surreal nightmare of fused limbs, emotional breakdowns, and existential questions about connection and identity. It’s a love story, but not the kind you’d bring home to mom.
The film leans heavily into body horror, so if you’re squeamish or not a fan of grotesque visuals, this might not be your cup of tea. But for fans of genre-bending cinema, it’s a wild ride. The practical effects are impressively gnarly, and the fact that Franco and Brie wore prosthetics to simulate being physically fused together adds a layer of authenticity that’s both hilarious and horrifying.
Critics have mostly praised the film, especially for the chemistry between its leads and its unique blend of emotional depth and visceral horror. Rotten Tomatoes has it sitting at a strong 91%, with reviewers calling it “emotionally sticky” and “memorably gnarly.” Some have even dubbed it one of the most romantic films of the year—despite (or maybe because of) its grotesque imagery. That said, not everyone’s on board. Some critics felt the horror elements were overshadowed by the relationship drama, and audiences gave it a more lukewarm CinemaScore of C+.
Together is definitely not for everyone. If you’re looking for a traditional horror movie or a straightforward romance, this might feel a bit too out there. But if you’re into films that take risks, push boundaries, and leave you thinking (and maybe a little grossed out), it’s worth checking out. Just maybe don’t watch it on a first date.
