Hoppers
Hoppers is a fresh, animated science‑fiction comedy that lands you right in the middle of a bustling city called Beaverton and its surrounding forest glade. The story follows Mabel Tanaka, a spirited Japanese‑American student who’s grown up with a deep love for nature thanks to her grandmother’s stories. When the mayor announces plans to replace the glade with a freeway, Mabel’s activism puts her at odds with the city’s power structure and her own college professor, who secretly has been working on a breakthrough technology called the “Hoppers” program.
The Hoppers tech lets a human consciousness hop into a lifelike robotic animal, giving the person a chance to experience life from that creature’s perspective. Mabel seizes the opportunity to hop into a robotic beaver, hoping to communicate with the animals and protect their habitat. From there, the film turns into a whirlwind adventure that blends environmental themes, animal politics, and a dash of spy‑thriller intrigue—think a mix of “Avatar” vibes and Mission Impossible action, all wrapped in Pixar’s signature humor and heart.
The voice cast is a star‑studded lineup that adds extra charm to the film. Piper Curda brings Mabel to life, while Bobby Moynihan voices King George, the beaver monarch who becomes Mabel’s unlikely ally. Jon Hamm plays the greedy mayor, and Kathy Najimy voices Dr. Samantha “Sam” Fairfax, the professor behind the hopping tech. Dave Franco, Meryl Streep, and a host of other talented actors round out the animal council and supporting characters, giving the film a rich, diverse soundscape.
If you’re a fan of Pixar’s knack for blending clever storytelling with stunning animation, Hoppers will feel like a natural fit. The film’s humor is light‑hearted and accessible, making it a great pick for families and kids who love animals. The environmental message—though subtly woven into the plot—adds depth without feeling preachy, so it’s likely to resonate with viewers who appreciate a good cause wrapped in a fun adventure.
On the flip side, if you’re not a big fan of animated comedies or prefer more grounded, realistic narratives, Hoppers might feel a bit too whimsical. The film’s focus on animal politics and its playful take on serious themes could also be a turn‑off for those who dislike overtly light‑hearted takes on environmentalism. But for most audiences, the movie’s charm, relatable protagonist, and the sheer joy of watching a beaver engineer save the day will leave you grinning from ear to ear.
